Gene Hyde captured this portrait of Broward-style Christmas in 1955. Notice the new terrazzo floor, swirled ceiling, and rather bold draperies characteristic of one of the thousands of new homes constructed here in the 1950s. Even the Christmas tree bespeaks its era—perhaps a little sparse by modern standards, but certainly well bejeweled. (H8906.1)

Halloween was a very special time for area students in the 1950s. Schools sponsored fairs and haunted houses, and classrooms enjoyed costume contests and parties with lots of treats. Above, a young teacher reveals the secret of a jack-o’-lantern to some rather eerily costumed children at the new Croissant Park Elementary School at 1800 Southwest Fourth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, shown below in October 1952.
